Nerd Wars
Episode 3: Revenge of the Nerd
After the disappointment surrounding my theft of his main speaker I was almost deterred. For fear that had been his intention, however, I plowed on for a second attempt at Episode 3. I decided to return to the original plan and take something from the top of his desk.
There’s actually not as much selection as one might expect though. The majority of his “critically important” clutter is comprised of cables and blank DVDs. Eventually I settled on his roll of solder.
That made sense to me because his first thought during Episode 2 was his soldering station. The station was a little too obvious but the solder was sitting, clearly visible, right next to the heating wand. Prize in hand I strolled off down the hallway to conceal it in my clever spot for the day. It changes every day so he can’t just check the hiding place to see what I took.
While I cooked dinner Brendan settled down in front of his computer. The mandatory ten minutes passed. He didn’t notice the solder’s absence. Technically a defeat for him but I still needed that victory in order to keep him interested down the track.
I was about to heat the pan for the cutlets. Once those were done it wouldn’t be long until dinner time and my outright, and unwanted, victory. So I told him I’d taken something. Immediately he set to work trying to spot what it might have been. A further ten minutes passed. “It wasn’t a screw, was it?” No.
At that point I realised that there was no way Episode 3 could end in victory for him. I decided to try for second-best. A draw. I began giving hints in order to help him guess. Sure, a guess isn’t noticing what’s missing but I didn’t much feel like posting Episode 2.5.1 so what can you do? It only took 3 hints before he guessed.
I’m beginning to wonder whether he wants to win.
